Today's question of the day was on bone lose, bone thinning and genetics. The sadness of a mother being diagnosed with osteopenia and the fear of passing this onto her daughter. Although there is some truth to genetics and a "type" who will get osteopenia, bone loss more likely is a dietary or environmental offender. That means what you eat and what you supplement with may actually be what is causing the loss of bone. The typical risk factors for osteoporosis are fair skinned women who have blue eyes and have never had a child. However, I know plenty of fair women who do not have bone loss. The more appropriate reason for bone loss is our highly acidic, inflammatory diets and toxicity levels that pervade our lives. It is a matter of basic chemistry class. When you wish to take an acid and want to make it more basic, you add calcium. Your body does the same. If you are highly acidic your body will pull minerals from your teeth, organs and bones in order to place it into your bloodstream with the purpose of creating a more basic, or less acidic environment. Many foods are acid producing. For a more in-depth look, check out our alkaline/acidic foods chart here. The choices on the chart should be closer to the mid-line. Drinking enough pure water during the day should help to counter acidic placed in the body. Obviously, the greener and less cooked will give you the most alkalinity. Remember, the body needs to be in balance. Although uncommon, you do not want to be overly alkaline as well as overly acidic. Supplementation plays a major role in acidity. If you are buying supplements that are synthetic and full of binders, fillers and flow agents such as sucrose, fructose, magnesium stearates, dioxides, etc., You are not only wasting your money, but you are actually causing more inflammation in your system. I have been there. Running two kids around to sports and doing homework, running two businesses, taxes, parents to visit, dinners to cook, homes to be cleaned, garden to be trimmed.....what did I forget?
