Resolution of Severe Constipation, Vomiting and Leg Pain in a Child Undergoing Subluxation Based Chiropractic Care: A Case Study
Children are a common occurance in my office and they often present with the same variety of "issues", "aches and pains" as adults. Adjustments help to normalize the nervous system and restore proper function to the body. It is no wonder that so many children receive the same positive results as our adults when the spine is realigned; which removes pressure from the rest of the body. The case study below is an example of the results we usually see and the healing ability that every "body" has.

Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health - Chiropractic ~ Volume 2013 ~ Issue 4 ~ Pages 84-89
Objective: To describe the chiropractic care of a 6-year-old male with complaints of chronic constipation, daily vomiting and “growing pains”.
Clinical Features: The patient’s constipation began at 2 years of age and has been under medical care since. Standard physical examination and endoscopic examinations revealed a "small stomach ulcer." Prescription medication since age 4 years involved 3 caps of Miralax at three times daily, Exlax one time per day, 10mg capsules of Lasoprizole once per day and Periactin to stimulate hunger. With respect to the patient’s leg pain complaint, the patient’s mother indicated that her son had recently complained of leg pain without cause and denied any history of trauma to her son’s legs. Chiropractic examination revealed sites of spinal and extraspinal subluxations.
Intervention and Outcomes: The patient was cared for with adjustments characterized as high velocity, low amplitude thrusts. The patient attended a total of 8 visits in a period of 3 weeks. Resolution of the patient’s constipation, vomiting and leg pain complaints were the outcome.
Conclusion: A pediatric patient with chronic constipation, vomiting and “growing pains” experienced subjective and objective improvements in symptoms under chiropractic. Further research is recommended to examine the effectiveness of chiropractic care as described in similar patients.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this case study as I have observed facial asymmetry as well as asymmetry of the skull following birth many times in my 15 years in family practice. Ususally the parents come in extremely concerned and fighting the option of putting a sort of "molding helmet" on the childs head for long periods of time during the day. Another aspect with facial asymmetry is to make sure the jaw is aligned. A symptom of this would be difficulty in nursing. Similarly, misalignments in the upper cervicals may make it difficult for the child to nurse from both sides of the body, as in a limitation of turning its head both right and left. It is important to have these asymmetrys checked of course, as well as the size of the head. But I myself have never had a case not clear up with adjustments of the spine and cranium , As well as manipulation of the musculature. Enjoy the case study below.

Introduction: To present the chiropractic care of a patient with facial asymmetry concomitant with vertebral subluxations.
Clinical Features: A four day old male presented with a facial asymmetry sustained at birth. Additional complaints included constipation, hypersalivation, and intestinal gas. Objective indicators of vertebral subluxation were identified via motion palpation and cranial examination. Infant reflexes were unremarkable.
Intervention & Outcomes: Logan Basic, Diversified, and Active Release were the techniques utilized over the course of care to reduce vertebral subluxations. The parents were given instructions on how to provide daily muscular treatments at home. The home regimen included soft-tissue massage, cranial massage, and inversion therapy.
Conclusion: The case of a four day old male with a history of facial asymmetry, constipation, hypersalivation, and intestinal gas is presented. Dramatic improvement in facial asymmetry is noted following the introduction of chiropractic care concomitant with a reduction in vertebral subluxation. Improvements were also observed with the patient's additional complaints. Further research is warranted to determine the benefits of chiropractic intervention.
Resolution of Nocturnal Enuresis and Vertebral Subluxation in a Pediatric Patient Undergoing Chiropractic Care: A Case Study & Review of the Literature
I have seen many children in my 14 years of practice have symptoms of night time bed wetting have resolution of the condition once they have been under chiropractic care. The problem tends to be a functional one, meaning pressure on the nervous system causing the body to work improperly. Once the body is balanced, pressure is removed from the area and begins to work properly.

Objective:To describe successful chiropractic care of a pediatric patient with nocturnal enuresis.
Clinical Features: A nine year old boy with nocturnal enuresis was presented for chiropractic care after unsuccessful medical approaches. Visual examination revealed several postural abnormalities. Motion palpation revealed vertebral subluxations in the cervical and lumbosacral spine regions.
Interventions and Outcomes:The patient was cared for with contact specific, high velocity, low-amplitude type thrust to sites of spinal subluxations. Proper dietary modifications were implemented as indicated from the patient’s 7-day dietary intake form. By the seventh visit, it was reported that the patient had been enuresis free for two weeks which continued to be the case at a four month follow up; which deemed resolution of nocturnal enuresis.
Conclusion:The case of a nine year old male with past history of nocturnal enuresis is presented. Dramatic improvement is noted following the introduction of chiropractic care concomitant with a reduction in vertebral subluxation. Additional research on the benefits of chiropractic care and nocturnal enuresis is warranted.
Ear infections are the #1 reason that children are initially brought into a chiropractic office. I bet you did not know that! Ear infections are a symptom of an underlying cause: food allergies, misalignments of the vertebrae that put pressure on the nerves - decreasing the effectiveness of the body at fighting illness and drainage of the tubes in the ears, other conditions such as candidaisis, which is discussed in the case study below.
Chiropractic education is focused on correcting underlying nutritional and biomechanical causes and is extremely effective for both ear infections and candidiasis.
Candida itself is a very extremely common problem in both men and women, which is caused by a high sugar and highly processed diet. It can also be passed from family member to family member and especially from mother to infant. If left untreated, candida leads to malabsorption issues, increased allergies, fatigue, depression, irritability, sleep disorders, joint aches, skin conditions, bloating, cramping, dry eyes and some paresthesias, as well as other symptoms.
In my office, I use a combination of chiropractic adustments in order to open the nervous system, correct balance of the body and improve immune and overall function of the body. In addition, I have added nutritional and blood testing, supplementation, which zeros in on nutritional/hormonal imbalances and then we feed the body what it needs for health.
Enjoy the case study below, pass it on to a friend in need, and above all, keep learning.

Applied Kinesiology Management of Candidiasis and Chronic Ear Infections: A Case History
Scott C. Cuthbert, D.C.Bio and Anthony L. Rosner, Ph.D.,LL.D(Hon), LLC Bio
Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health - Chiropractic ~ Volume 2010 ~ Issue 3 ~ Pages 122 -129 Abstract
Objective: To describe the use of Applied Kinesiology (AK) in the management of a pre-adolescent female with candidiasis, recurrent ear infections, and severe postural imbalances that occurred when these infections were present.
Clinical Features: This six-year-old patient had painful earaches on a monthly basis since the age of 4-months. She had undergone antibiotic treatment 25 times in her life, suffered two urinary tract infections, and displayed oral thrush. Exposure to water and cold air consistently produced an ear infection according to her parents.
Intervention & Outcome: AK methods were utilized to diagnose and treat this patient with rapid resolution of her candidiasis, ear pain in cold air and water, and ear infections. She has been symptom-free for 2 years since her first 4 AK treatments over a three-month period.
Conclusion: In this case a multi-modal chiropractic system for the evaluation of muscle-joint subluxations were useful for the discovery of a number of complex causative factors underlying this patient’s digestive and immune system compromise, as well as her recurring infections and earaches.

I have been a chiropractor for since 1996 but an athlete since I played baseball with the boys in the early pee wee leagues. I continued with sports throughout my high school career: softball, basketball, skiing and competitive horseback riding. In chiropractic school I was introduced to functional exercise and structural rehabilitation and continue to do this type of exercise to this day with great success.
