Do you experience gas, bloating, heartburn, agita (as we say in Jersey)? Trouble digesting can be from a multitude of causes: Environmental stress, physical stress, emotional stress, pharmaceutical stress and dietary stress. Today I am discussing dietary stress and the possible need for the addition of digestive enzymes. If you do try the enzymes and do not have a good result, you either have purchased cheap enzymes and wasted your money, or you have one of the other above stressors going on.
Above is a chart of when and where enzymes are released and which enzymes break down what types of food.
In order to figure out what may be happening to your digestion, you can follow these steps:
1. Watch the clock. If you are bloated within 10 minutes of eating, it may be a hydrochloric acid insufficiency. A great product is Digestzymes by Designs for Health. If 30-60 minutes after eating you get gas, bloating or the food is sitting like a rock in your stomach, your natural digestive enzymes are not working and you can benefit from enzyme supplementation. Another great product is Plant digestive enzymes that do not contain HCL by designs for health.
2. You can get tested. A simple test can confirm enzyme and HCL deficiencies. It can also reveal bacterial, fungal and sometimes parasitic imbalances that could throw your digestion off track. If you experience pain after eating, you need to see your practitioner for further evaluation. We do testing in office and send to Genova labs for results.
