The Standard cholesterol reference range is 100 to 199, however with functional medicine the optimal range is 180 to 240. Cholesterol is vital for human life and we cannot live without it. It is synthesized based on need. Needed for reproduction, biosynthesis, cell structure and tissue repair. Cholesterol is a sterol not just a fat. It’s a certain type of fat. 75% is synthesized in the body and this is our primary source of cholesterol with only 25% of it coming from dietary intake. Cholesterol is so important that it is created by and recycled by the body daily. In 1967 the reference range for cholesterol for men was 255 and for women was 280. The current ranges are lower than they’ve ever been. Human health has been sacrificed for corporate profits with many studies being manipulated to support the lower ranges. Newer and other studies have been shown that higher levels are highly beneficial and protective. Decreased cholesterol concerns under 180 include the following: weakened cellular membranes, poor quality myelin sheath, an inability to think clearly, poor memory, insufficient steroid hormone production, impaired immune system function, fatty acid deficiency, uncontrolled inflammation, impaired brain function and poor neurotransmitters. Levels under 180 are associated with a 200% increase in cerebrovascular accidents, a 300% increase in liver cancer, a 200% increase in lung disease, a 200% increase in depression and suicide, a 200% increase in addictive behavior. You don’t believe me? Go to the latest studies on punned.com where all the most recent research is. If you have increased cholesterol and high triglycerides you should always look for the cause first. Blood sugar dysregulation and stress are likely culprits. Consider herbal and or nutritional support to optimize liver and biliary function. Evaluate for underlying thyroid dysfunction. Investigate for possible reasons for inflammation including dietary. Remember to fast before you take your cholesterol testing because cholesterol and triglycerides are sensitive to intake of dietary fat. Excess levels of cholesterol are associated with glucose dysregulation, obesity, inactivity, smoking and poor liver function, and overall inflammation. A good measure is, Is the ratio between the level of HDL/ total cholesterol that we need to be concerned about. In adults the HDL cholesterol versus the total cholesterol ratio should be higher than .24 just divide your HDL/TotalCholesterol. .24 or higher is considered ideal, under .24 is considered low, and less than .10 is very dangerous. So generally speaking the higher the ratio, the better and the lower your risk of heart attack. More importantly is the triglyceride/HDL cholesterol ratio which should be below 2. Just divide your triglyceride level by your HDL. The triglyceride/HDL ratio of 2 or less is considered ideal. 4 is considered high, 6 is considered too much. It is now believed that the triglyceride/HDL ratio is one of the most potent predictors of heart disease. Higher Triglycerides alone increase the risk of heart attack nearly threefold. Therefore the ratio of triglycerides to HDL is the strongest predictor of a heart attack. Cholesterol is the fireman of your body. Its job is to put out fires. If your body is inflamed because of toxins, poor diet, and lack of fitness, your body will produce higher cholesterol to put out the inflammation fires. Rethink your statins, Rethink about your cholesterol levels, read the latest studies, learn to think for yourself. It’s not the cholesterol. linktr.ee/DrKCarlucci
